The Ford Excursion was first unveiled at the Dallas Auto Show in March 1999. As the world's largest and heaviest sports utility vehicle (SUV), the Ford Excursion is built on the same platform as the new Super-Duty pickup trucks. It's not surprising that it can seat nine with ease.
The 2005 Ford Excursion boasted a new grille, bumper, and jeweled headlights. Consumers could also choose wheels and a range of eye-catching colors. This SUV also has a BlockerBeam, a steel cross-member below the front bumper that is designed to prevent a passenger car from sliding under the Excursion in a crash.
A favorite target of environmental groups, the Ford Excursion has often made headlines, despite Ford's claim that more than 80 percent of the vehicle is made from recyclable parts and all the three engine options are certified to low emission vehicle (LEV) standards.
But environmentalists are not the only group troubling Ford; the company is facing a growing number of complaints lodged by Ford Excursion owners.
The following are common problems faced by Ford Excursion owners, as filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):
Although each of these problems has been the basis of a recall, the electrical system wiring defect is especially troublesome. The NHTSA cites that, with the electrical system wiring defect present, the Ford Excursion engine may stall without warning while on the road and may or may not restart. If the Ford Excursion stalls in the middle of heavy traffic, a nasty crash could result. In some cases, the company has upgraded the fuel injection control module wire harness. An injection control pressure sensor connector has also been installed. But there have been instances when all these measures have yielded no result.
One consumer described his experience with the Ford Excursion:
"I have a Ford Excursion. This weekend my wife was driving it and when she came out of the store she could start it, but not shift out of park. I read up on the manual and started it in neutral and got it home. I noticed when I was driving it home, there were no lights on the temperature control A/C Heater display. It is just blank. I talked to the dealer this morning about the recall and I am taking it in for the wiring harness replacement today...for the speed control. The cruise control quit working about three months ago."
