Is your Audi A6 a lemon?

The Audi A6 is generally perceived as harmonious blend of technology, comfort, and style. The latest Audi A6 models are both larger and roomier than the previous models. What's more, this generation of Audi A6s has a change in styling that makes it a looker. The manufacturer claims that all the bugs found in previous models have been fixed, and that the A6 offers the latest in safety features and engineering.

The Audi A6 comes in two versions: V6 and V8. The V6 model performs quite well for all acceleration purposes, but for a high performance sports sedan, opt for the V8. Added features in the vehicle include an Electronic Stability Program, Anti Lock Brakes (ABS), Electronic Brake-Force Distribution, and Brake Assist. The Audi A6 features several passenger safety elements, including two-stage front airbags, side impact airbags to protect the torso, a set of airbags to protect the head in a side impact, as well as active front head airbags to protect occupants from a collision from behind.

Common Problems

The following are common problems faced by Audi A6 owners, as filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):

  • Fuel System, Gasoline: Delivery: Fuel Pump
  • Electrical System
  • ir bags
  • Visibility: Rearview Mirrors/Devices: Exterior
  • Power Train: Automatic Transmission
  • Service Brakes, Hydraulic: Antilock

Several of these problems have been the subject of recalls. On some vehicles, a change in the electrical motor components in the fuel pump led to an inoperative fuel pump, which stopped the fuel supply to the engine and caused it to stall. If the fuel flow to the engine is interrupted, the vehicle can stall without warning and thus potentially increase the risk of a crash.

In certain vehicles, if a driver's knees push against the knee bolster (crash element) located under the dashboard, it can touch the headlight switch wiring harness, causing an electrical short. As a result, a fire can originate in the left dashboard area.

On some vehicles equipped with three-spoke sports steering wheels, it appears that the igniter for the driver's side air bag may not have been properly assembled. An improperly positioned igniter will not activate the air bag in the event of a crash.

Consumer complaints filed with NHTSA include the following comments:

"While driving 85 mph , the antilock brakes were applied and there was a considerable delay before the vehicle reached a complete stop. This occurred during normal braking and on a dry road. The vehicle was taken to the dealership for inspection. The dealership could not duplicate the problem. The manufacturer was notified."

"Audi A6 air bags are too short and cannot protect passenger. Consumer was taken to the hospital for x-rays. The consumer stated the air bag only protected the top six inches of the window and as a result, her head hit the front passenger door window during the accident."
